Physical Oceanography is an academic journal dedicated to the field of Marine physics, covering a wide range of research involving the physical processes of the ocean and their boundary conditions. The journal mainly publishes research results related to ocean physics, including observational research, theoretical research and modeling research. Research can range from internal ocean processes to complex boundary processes related to the ocean, such as ocean circulation, ocean fluctuations, ocean mixing and their relationship with the Earth's climate system.

With a special focus on papers that reveal specific physical processes, the journal seeks to gain an in-depth understanding of key issues in ocean physics through systematic theoretical analysis and empirical data. In addition, Physical Oceanography welcomes research articles that explore the interactions between the oceans and other components of the Earth system. For example, research into the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere, or how the ocean affects biological and chemical processes, is within the scope of its publication.
