A peer-reviewed, subject-oriented academic publication published by Illar Magazine. The main objective of the Ilar Journal is to provide timely and accurate information to professionals who are engaged in animal research, use animals in experiments, care for laboratory animals, and supervise the use of animals in scientific research. It serves not only scientists and researchers, but also policy makers, ethicists and the general public.

The journal pays special attention to research that uses animals as direct subjects or as substitutes for humans, publishing original research articles, reviews, reviews, and case studies. These articles cover a wide range of areas from basic science to applied research, including but not limited to biomedical, behavioral, genetics, pharmacology, and toxicology.
